oval case Set within a rectangular gilt-metal frame with embossed shell motif border, the reverse engraved Jean Baptiste Isabey / b 1767-1855/ dated 1810

The demand for portraits of Napoleon was so great that it could only be satisfied by many artists painting them. This miniature s characteristic of a type established by Jean-Baptiste Isabey, Napoleon's principal portrait painter in miniature, that was also produced in large numbers by other artists. In the many versions by Isabey and his studio the uniform and orders might be altered according to individual circumstances, Here Napoleon is shown wearing the uniform of the Chasseurs à cheval, the ribbon and cross of the Legion of Honour, the star of the Iron Crown and the badge of the Grand eagle of the Legion of Honour. There are several examples of this image by Isabey and his followers in the Wallace Collection

Isabey was introduced to Napoleon by Hortense de Beauharnais and painted many portraits at the Imperial Court
