A Naïve English Watercolour of Weymouth
Watercolour and gum arabic on paper in contemporary birds eye maple frame
Circa 1820-40

Size : 38 cm high, 61 cm wide – 15 ins high, 24 ins wide
Seemingly influenced by Neapolitan gouache scenes this painting was most probably produced by a British sailor who worked with a brush to record his home town rather than in wool-work. Before the days of photography water colour painting was used by both the Royal Navy and Armed Forces as means of recording enemy positions, and many artists-craftsmen learnt their skills whilst in service.
Fenton, the British photographer whilst recording the Crimean War (1835-56) noted British officers in the field painted sensitive watercolours.
