Deer hide, glass seed beads, sinew
Circa 1870

Size: 81 cm long – 32 ins long
By 1840 the introduction of European steel needles enabled the native women to utilise the small seed beads traded across the Plains in more complicated designs. In the 1860’s beads became available in larger quantities and the decorated parts of clothing and accessories increased. Short narrow strips of quillwork along the seams of shirts and leggings were replaced by longer and broader bands of beadwork.
