A Native American, North West Coast, Whalebone Bark Pounder
Late 18th/Early 19th Century

Size: 28.5 cm long – 11¼ ins long
Whalebone pounders were used for shredding bark in the preparation of bark ribbons for the weaving of mats. It is interesting to note that the wooden bark pounders found in the Islands of the South Pacific also have grooved surfaces.
