A mid-nineteenth century nocturnal view of a Continental coastline depicting small ships approaching a village on the shorefront.

Follower of Henry Pether. Framed dimensions are listed.

Henry, his father Abraham and his older brother Sebastian Pether were know for their nocturnal land and seescapes.

The moon is central to the composition illuminating the picture evenly. The main objective of this image is to create mood and atmosphere. The drama of light and shade plays out in waves across the canvas adding dynamic movement to the scene.
