These wonderfully, mildly bonkers, griffins would most likely have been atop gate piers or have flanked a flight of steps. The griffin is a mythical beast having the head, wings and claws of an eagle and the body of a lion, whose combined symbolism represents both courage and watchfulness - these attributes are why the Greeks believed these fabulous creatures guarded the gold mines of the Scythians.
