A Pair of finely carved white painted bergere armchairs in the Louis XVI manner, the channeled frames with shaped crest rail, flanked by carved finials above upholstered backs, elbow rests and seats, with the scrolling arms, all supported on turned stop-fluted tapering legs, headed with paterae.

This form of bergere is closely associated with the work of Georges Jacob (1739 — 1814) who is considered the leading master menuisier to have been working in France at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. His furniture always shows a remarkable sophistication of form combined with restraint and an unerring quality of construction. This pair of bergeres follows in Jacob's tradition.
