Canton porcelain is a term given to Chinese ceramics produced for the European market between the 18th and 20th centuries. The bodies of such porcelain were made, glazed and fired at Jingdezhen and decorated in vibrant enamels at Canton (Guangzhou) prior to being exported by sea.
This pair of bottleneck vases is typical of the Canton porcelain made in the late 19th century. The positioning of the figurative cartouches upon a stylised naturalistic ground in pink and green glazes is specific to wares produced and exported from this port to Europe and America.
Made for the Export Market.
