Constructed in Algerian Rose Onyx, dressed with Bronze ormolu mounts: rising from square bronze mounted bases, the baluster form urns have ormolu flambeaux handles, conjoined with swagged laurel wreaths, having domed terminals, dressed with ormolu fir cone finials.

The ‘Algerian Onyx-Marbles Company’, of the Bvd des Italiens, Paris, was founded after the rediscovery 1847 at the Sidi Ben Kaye quarries in Algeria, a source of Onyx used in the Roman period, and exhibited to great acclaim in the Universelle Expositions of 1862 and 1867 (where they won a Gold medal), and their products were illustrated in J.B. Waring’s four volume catalogue, ‘Masterpieces of Industrial Art & Sculpture’, London 1862
