James Shoolbred started his company at 55 Tottenham Court Road in the 1820s. He supplied textiles to the burgeoning interior decoration market in London, including carpets, wool, silk and linens. In the 1870s he started to design and manufacture his own furniture and by the 1880s the company was operating as a department store. Furniture design became so important that the company produced design books every year. These were so detailed, and popular, that many were used as design templates and widely copied by provincial and even colonial cabinetmakers. Unfortunately the company did not survive the financial crisis of 1929 and closed its doors for good in 1931.
