A delightful pair of polychrome Delft dogs, seated on integrated bases. Each modelled from earthenware with a white underglaze and decorated with a blue glaze, with additional details in yellow and brown.
The town of Delft in the Netherlands has been renowned for its earthenware ceramics since the seventeenth century. Originally produced in emulation of costly and exotic Chinese porcelain, by around the 1670s Delftware had developed its own idiosyncratic style of decoration, incorporating European subjects and motifs. Despite this, the Asian-inspired palette of blue and white continued to dominate, and is still associated with the town to this day.

With some chips and repairs.
