A Pair of Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Four-Light Wall Appliqués, After Pierre Gouthière,

Each with a tied ribbon above knotted drapery descending to an Apollo mask above a lyre, entwined with floral garlands and centered by a paterae, above ribbon-tied laurel branches, the nozzles cast as laurel leaf buds.

These wall lights are based on a model made by Pierre Gouthière after wax models by Francois-Joseph Belanger for the Duchesse de Mazarin in 1781.

The sale of her collection on 10-15 December 1781 included one such pair described as being 'par Gouthière'. A wall light of this model but lacking the ribbon-tied upper section, is in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, and is illustrated in H.Ottomeyer, P.Proschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol.1, p.243, fig4.5.12.

Examples of this design were made by both Beurdeley and Dasson in the 19th Century and the quality of these wall lights suggest that they are are very possibly by one of them. A pair executed by Henry Dasson is illustrated in Ottomeyer, Proschel, op.cit., p.425, fig.6.3.13.
