Gillows of Lancaster were probably the most celebrated of all English furniture makers. They were established in the early 18th century, and pieces made by Gillows are very desirable and extremely sought after. A pair chairs of an almost identical model, stamped by Gillows, is in the Abbot Hall Museum and Art Gallery, Kendal, illustrated in Mary Burkett, A History of Gillows of Lancaster, 1969, pl. 14. A related set of chairs see were sold in Sothebys, Fine English Furniture Sale, 28th September 2001.
