A Pair of Small Bronze Mounted Table Ambulantes With Marble Tops, each table having a marble top within a gilt bronze border above a satin wood frieze with foliate gilt-bronze mounts, raised on four tapering fluted mahogany legs surmounted by silvered plaques of classical figures intersecting the frieze, the legs united by a cruciform stretcher centred by a gilt bronze foliate boss.

Small useful occasional tables of this type became increasingly popular in the later part of the nineteenth century, as more relaxed social habits emerged. They often drew their inspiration from furniture of earlier periods and the use of the silvered classical medallions may have been an interesting reinterpretation of eighteenth century examples which employed porcelain medallions by Wedgwood or Sèvres, such as the models produced by Gaspard Schneider for the Petit Trianon in the 1780's.
