Illustration 119119, from the National Archives records, discloses the preliminary sketch and design for the stools – revealing that in the actual manufacture, the makers decided not to proceed with the backs.
Crichley, Wright and Co.: The Company, trading as ‘Crichley, Wright and Co.’, was established by George Wright of Burton Weir, Rotherham; George Wilton Chambers; and Henry Crichley at Burton Weir, Sheffield in 1854. In 1861, the Company moved to Rotherham.
George Wright: George Wright served his apprenticeship under George Haywood at Yates, Haywood and became a noted designer of stove grates, being largely responsible for the Yates, Haywood display at the 1851 Great Exhibition.
