Georges Van der Straeten is a celebrated Belgian sculptor, mainly producing busts and figures using plaster and bronze. He was from Ghent, where he worked as a lawyer until 1882 when he took up sculpting. In 1883 he moved to Paris and was recoreded at having lived at 9 Avenue Hoche in 1910. He exhibited at the Salon exhibition at the Louvre from 1885 until 1912. He received a silver medal award at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, being rewarded for his high quality finishes and his technical expertise. He became a Knight of the Legion d'Honneur in 1903. Later in his life he returned to Belgium to his home town of Ghent.
