Thomas Worlidge was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi (1659-1732, 6th Marquess, an artist from Genoa, from whose family W. Grimaldi was descended. Thomas practised portrait painting in Bath and later settled in London. He painted miniatures and executed portraits in pastel and oil as well as small finished portraits in black-lead as is this a fine example. Worlidge has been described as being hot tempered, gluttonous and extravagant and is said to have had 32 children. There are two pencil portraits in H.M. the Queen' s collection and a pencil portrait of George II in the National Portrait Gallery
