At first glance what unfolds in this beautifully detailed gouache on board is a typical scene from the mid 19th century showing a pony and gig accompanied by the family mutt passing through a pastoral English landscape, although on closer inspection it is in fact a matter of life and death.
The gig (embellished with the royal insignia) is pulled by 'Joe a favourite horse' the property of Sir John Atchelor the driver who by special appointment from the time of George III to Queen Victoria is chief slaughterer of horses to the royal family and this is just another day where he is going about his business.
Painting after J Powley.
