Wearing a brown coat
set in the original gold frame with plaited hair border, the reverse with aperture to reveal plaited hair within pearl border and blue guilloche enamel, with original red leather travelling case

The soft palette and creamy green tones exploited in this portrait are so typical of the hand of Charles Robertson. In 1772, 1773 and 1774 "Master Charles Robertson" exhibited "Likenesses and Designs in Hair," and in 1775 "Miniatures." Having produced hair portraits in his youth it is interesting to note how he treats hair within in his painted miniatures as seen in the border of this miniature. Robertson's miniatures are amongst the best produced by Irish artist of the time
