wearing gold bordered scarlet uniform with green facings, gold-bordered green waistcoat, lace cravat, powdered hair en queue
set in the original gold bracelet clasp frame with garnet border

The uniform shows the sitter to belong to the Infantry -either the 11th or 39th Regiment, which formerly had wide green striped facings becoming narrower, as shown here, post 1760.

Sullivan was of Irish birth who took to miniature painting comparatively late in life and brought to it an original view. Born in Co. Louth he came to England at an early age, learnt the art of engraving and became assistant engraver to Hogarth. Subsequently he painted landscapes in watercolour and drew etchings.
