a gold order is suspended from a gold chain around his neck, he wears a gold mounted ruby on his index finger
The red background is inscribed in gold AETAT 27 AD1636

Provenance: Col Henry Baker Sweet (b. 1821 Devon-d. 19 November 1893) of the Madras Army, living at 63 Belgrave Road, Pimlico

The key to the sitter's identity appears to lie in the ring on the index finger, which indicates a person of considerable power and authority and in the gold Garter insignia which the sitter appears to be pointing at.

The sitter is depicted wearing the British fashion for the period circa 1636, yet the use of red in the background was a feature that many Dutch artists used at the time. So the portrait is likely to represents a British nobleman of considerable authority, who was born in 1609 and who was travelling on the Continent in 1636 – when this miniature was painted.
