Beaumont was the only talented miniaturist to have become an insurance magnate. Born simply as J.T. Barber, he entered the R.A. Schools in 1791, won awards 1791-95 and exhibited at the R.A. 1794-1806. He soon became a miniature painter to members of the royal family; but in 1806 he "drifted into insurance", as he put it, founding the Provident Institution and subsequently the County Fire Office and the Provident Life Insurance Company. In about 1820 he took the additional name Beaumont to mark his claim of connection with the family.

Although not signed The miniature has been authenticated in a letter which accompanies this piece,by the now deceased, David Beaumont, a direct descendent of the artist.
