Crosse painted miniatures in watercolour, in enamel and in some oil portraits. Hew was a prolific artitst, painting more than 100 miniatures in 1777 alone. The greenish blue tinge for the face and background seen in this portrait is typical of his style.
He had the misfortune to be born deaf and dumb. He studied in London, exhibiting at the Society of Artists 1760-96 and at the R.A. 1770-96. During this time he was appointed painter in Enamel to George III.
