wearing a low cut blue dress trimmed with fichu
set in contemporary gold frame, the bright cut reverse with initial S engraved
Bowyer was self taught, although subsequently was closely associated with John Smart and became his pupil. Acted as his attorney when Smart went to India (1785-95) and became guardian of his two illegitimate children, Sarah and John Smart Junior. He exhibited at the R.A., 1783-1828 and succeeded Jeremiah Meyer as miniature painter to George III and Queen Charlotte in 1789.
Bowyer is known to have copied some of Smart's work, they are not of his quality but nevertheless he draws from Smart's style and technique, as can be seen from this example.
