Nixon painted portraits in oil and watercolour, historical subjects and book illustrations, but his chief interest lay in miniatures. He exhibited at the R.A. 1772-1807 and appointed limner to the Prince of Wales.

Details of Nixon's work vary and those that are unsigned are often difficult to identify, due to the fact that he seemed capable of absorbing other artist's styles, and of working in more than one manner. His technique, however, usually conveys much of the force and lighting of an oil painting and he was greatly influenced by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
