wearing a beige cloak under a black cloak ,white lace jabot tied with black ribbon, long blond full-bottomed wig
watercolour on vellum, set in the original frame with pierced spiral cresting

Although little is known about Dixon he was appointed King's "Lymner in ordinary" in 1673, and was rewarded with the same payment and benefits as his celebrated predecessor, and probable master, Samuel Cooper. Dixon's artistic prowess was largely channelled into making copies for the King, largely taken from paintings by Cooper, Riley, Kneller and Lely. It has not been possible to ascertain the identify of the sitter in this portrait but his exquisite lace jabot and silk black cloak would suggest he was definitely a man of wealth and no doubt connected to the court in same way.
