inscribed on reverse George Ravenshaw/ born 1779 died of/ yellow fever in W. Indies/ in 1812./ Was made Commander immediately after the/ battle of San Domingo. He served under Nelson./ Was 3rd son of the / first John Goldsborough/ Ravenshaw /and Elizabeth Withers, his wife, set in a velvet lined rectangular leather travelling case
Sold together with a letter dated May 8 /17 to Harold from her cousin Elizabeth Ravenshaw, describing how family tradition states that the sitter in the miniature was one of Lord Nelson's Flag Captain.
Ravenshaw was first-lieutenant of the Spencer in 1806 and was Captain of the Cherub in the Leeward Isles in 1808.
