Shirreff was born in Edinburgh, lost his speech when he was about four years old but was able to make himself understood with signs. Moved to Lindon in 1769, where he entered the R.A. SChools in 1769, winning a Silver Medal in 1772. He traveled widely working in Bath, India 1797 at first to Madras and then Caluctta about 1799-1809, where he met with considerable success.
John was christened on 15 April 1759 at Fritwell Oxfordshire. He married Ann Gomm on 1 Dec 1788 at Ascot under Wychwood, Oxfordshire. In addition to Thomas they had four other boys. Francis Moore was the vicar of Duffiled, Derbyshire 1858-1898 (formerly) of St. Bees. The miniature is in good condition with no signs of fading.
