Gold frame, tortoiseshell reverse with old exhibition label and collector label of 1884

Miss Keppel was the illegitimate daughter and co-heiress of Admiral Augustus, Viscount Keppel (1725-1786), a naval officer and politician, second son of William Anne Keppel, second earl of Albemarle (1702-1754), and his wife Anne. Augustus was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty and created Viscount Keppel in 1782. Although he never married he did have several mistresses.

Miss Keppel married Captain, later General, Thomas Meyrick, of the 66th Regiment in 1787, probably around the time that this miniature was painted. Sir Joshua Reynolds painted a portrait of Miss Keppel and her father, who was a friend of the artist.

According to The Gentleman's Magazine in 1830, she was 'a very pretty woman, who being her father's sole heir, brought him a handsome acquisition of fortune'.
