Hollow cut (the white paper cut out and placed over a black background) was the simplest form of creating a profile, because the commercially produced black paper of the eighteenth-century was rough, and so was difficult to cut precisely. Artists who cut out of black paper generally used white paper which they blackened themselves, often with India ink.
