Cassandra Elizabeth Austen (9 January 1773 - 22 March 1845) was an amateur English watercolourist and the elder sister of Jane Austen - whose 200th anniversary we celebrate this year..

This profile appears to be based on the silhouette by John Field, working in the studio of John Miers, of which there were two versions made. One version, being formerly the property of E.Florence Austen, which was exhibited at the NPG in 1972, was sold at Christies, in 1993 for £4260. The other known example signed by Miers and Field, was in the Leonard Morgan May collection and sold at Sotheby's, in 1985.

Smith has attempted to emulate the facial features of Cassandra's profile with a great deal of accuracy, but has brought the profile up to date by depicting the sitter in a fashionable dress of the 1820's rather than the low cut dress of 1812 in the Miers silhouette.
