A fine engraved gorge cased carriage clock signed for Henri Jacot. The eight-day duration movement has a platform lever escapement and strikes the hours on a bell and the quarters on two bells; with the repeat sounding both the previous hour and quarters and the backplate stamped with the serial number 1664. The movement has all the indications of being made by Jacots' friend Louis Baveux in his workshops in Saint-Nicolas d'Aliermont and is stamped on the inside with the Baveux blanc roulant number 516. Of great interest is the date stamped to the top of the front-plate 23 11 77, which corresponds with the year that my research would show as the year the movement was made and as such adds to the story. The inside of the front-plate is embossed with the Jacot oval showing the last exhibition date as 1862.
The white enamel dial has black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands and an engraved mask. The rear of the dial has various markings showing it to have been made by Adolphe Mojon, and was to be retailed by Dent having been distributed by Valogne, the Paris and London based agent.
The gorge case is finely engraved in a style typical of the Henri Jacot clocks at this period.
For further details of the Jacot business, including a summary of my on-going research into both their clocks and family, I refer you to the exhibition catalogue available to view via my website.
