Margaret Murray Cookesley was born in London, a landscape and figure painter of Egyptian and historical subjects, mainly in oil although she was also well known for her watercolours. Like other Orientalist artists she visited the Middle East, a brave thing to do for a woman at that time. Her work is similar to that of other specialists in Egyptian subjects such as Goodall and Edwin Long. Exhibited in most leading galleries from 1884 to 1889, including the Royal Academy, the New Watercolour Society and the Society of Women Artists. Margaret Murray Cookesley later moved to Bath where she lived for many years and eventually died in 1917.
