Ford flourished 1793-1830, and Foskett notes that Schidlof mentioned two portraits by him. An officer signed on the reverse J.E. Ford, Cape Town and another signed on the reverse. J.E. Ford, 1828. Ford exhibited at the RA. 1793-1797.

Ford appears to be the one of the only recorded miniature artist working in Cape Town at this time. The art of miniature painting was very popular on the Continent and in England but apparently did not seem to have the same popularity in South Africa.
