A Rare African Congo, Cross River Region Shield
19th Century

Size : 104 cm long – 41 ins long
The soot covered surface of this old shield is made up of thin strips of wood braided and bound together with sinew and plant material. It most probably originates from the cross river region, a thickly forested area on the border between Cameroon and Southern Nigeria. Shields of this type were carried by the Ekoi’s relatives; the Keaka.
