A Rare and Important Pair of Vienna Vases and Covers With Painted Panels Depicting ‘Othello Appealing to the Doge’.

The base of each vase stamped Austria.

This exceptional pair of cobalt-blue ground vases have exceptional painted panels to the front depicting finely painted Shakespearean Scenes From "Othello" Act I, Scene 3. after Karl Ludwig Friedrich Becker (1820-1900).

The first vase depicts Othello pleading before the Doge and Brabantio, Desdemona at his side, and members of the senate looking on. The second vase depicts Desdemona defending her decision of matrimony. The reverse of each vase contains equally finely painted panels, with classical scenes while the base of each vase has panels of cupid with classical figures.
