This unusual nine-light chandelier is modelled as a torch en flambeau with a blue enamelled band, supporting to its sides three smaller enamelled torches issuing scrolling arms with perching birds, female masks and goat’s head terminals. The chandelier is supported by gilt bronze suspension rods and a foliate cast corona.
This chandelier follows almost exactly the design by Pierre Gouthière for a pair of appliqués made for the Salon Trianon at Versailles for Marie Antoinette. A preliminary drawing for the appliqués survives in the collection of the Museé des Arts Décoratifs, Paris and is reproduced as Fig. 4.5.4 in Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel's, ‘Vergoldete Bronzen’. Gouthière's design shows an identical treatment of the candlearms with corresponding perching birds, female masks and goat’s head terminals.
