A Rare Chinese Rhinoceros Horn Hair Pin
17 th – 18 th Century

Size : 46 cm long – 18 ins long
These hair pins were most probably worn by men to keep a small bun of hair in place . Hair pins were prominent items of Chinese jewellery worn by both men and women . Hair pins of ivory and bone were used during the Shang Dynasty ( 1600 - 1100 B.C ) and excavated 14 th - 16 th century tomb paintings show men wearing hair pins and ornaments as well as small caps in jade or gold .
