Yixing wares take their name from the town where they were produced in the Westerly province of Jiangsu. They are categorized by being made of fine red clay; known in China as zisha (purple sand) and were particularly popular with scholars in the Ming Dynasty. Their popularity reached its height with the import into Europe in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
