In the late 19 th century the Sub-Arctic Cree were hunters and fur trappers , living primarily off fish and game and food obtained from the Hudson's Bay Company Posts in exchange for furs . They travelled by birch bark canoes in the summer , dog sled and snowshoes in the winter and mostly lived in conical or domed wigwams covered with traded canvas . At this time the hunters still wore native moccasins , but they hunted with guns .
