This is a particularly rare example of an early eighteenth century Cuban mahogany chest on chest or tallboy. The moulded cornice rises above a secret cushion drawer and below a set of graduated drawers in two halves separated by a generous waist moulding. The sides to the base run through to the floor and support the piece, the moulded feet are applied for decoration and form. As well as the early form of carcass mouldings framing the drawers, the side of the front have unusual and exquisite vertical mouldings.
The incredibly dense timber, which allows the details and moulding to be as crisp as the day it was made, has a wonderful rich colour and patina. No photographs can do this sublime colour justice - it must be seen to be truly appreciated! All the handles and escutcheons are original.
