A rare five-minute repeating Corniche cased carriage clock by Henri Jacot; with an eight-day duration movement by Baveux Frères, striking the hours and half-hours on a gong and when the repeat button is pressed sounding the hours on one gong and then the five-minute intervals on another gong of a different tone. The original silvered platform lever escapement is stamped to the underside with the escapement maker’s serial number 8879. The backplate is stamped with the serial number 8656 along with the Jacot trademark, a parrot sat on a perch either side of the initials HJ, and Paris, with the dial plate and inside the back plate stamped with the oval trademark of Henri Jacot giving the various exposition medal awards, the last being 1878. The front-plate is stamped with the Baveux Frères serial number, 6077. The white enamel is signed to rear with the dial maker’s initials, Jt, for Émile Jeannet and has black Roman numerals, diamonds & dots to the outer aspect and the trademark inner circle, along with blued steel spade hands.
The serial number on this clock, 8656, would indicate a date of manufacture of 1891.
For details of the relationship between Jacot and the Baveux family, as well as that with the dial maker Émile Jeannet, please refer to my on-line Jacot exhibition catalogue.
