A rare George IV / William IV Scottish Provincial Gold Vinaigrette of rounded oblong form with reeded sides & a chased floral thumb piece, plain domed base & cover, initialled "MA" below a coronet*, the grille pierced & engraved with a rose flower, maker's mark only "J.M.", struck thrice in the cover & thrice in the base, probably for John Mackie, Ellon c.1830
*Possibly for Margaret, Viscountess Arbuthnot (married 1805 - died 1879). The Arbuthnot estate is located between Montrose & Stonehaven, within reasonable proximity of Ellon.

It is most likely that due to its form & construction this vinaigrette was made in Birmingham. It could then have been purchased & retailed by John Mackie, a watchmaker. This was often the case with small items ie. wine labels at this period.
