This exceptionally fine Bowl stands on a circular pedestal foot which rises to a baluster shaped body and an egg and dart everted rim. The main body is unusually decorated with a beautiful band of butter cup motifs, which is enclosed by two beaded bands. The two unusual scroll handles are decorated with leaf capping and also display a single flower head. The interior displays original gilding and the front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Crest. This piece is of a very good weight and displays crisp hallmarks in the base.

Before moving to London, to work closely with Paul Storr and the firm of Rundell & Bridge, Benjamin Smith lived and worked in Birmingham, for some time in partnership with Matthew Boulton. The quality of his work, either alone or in partnership, is comparable to that of Storr. Benjamin Smith's work is contained within the collection of Her Majesty the Queen and his most important production is probably the Jamaica Service of 1803 in the Royal Collection.
