Produced in Arita, Hizen province, Japan, for the Western market, the jar of typical shouldered hexagonal form with a domed cover surmounted with a flattened knop finial decorated in underglaze-blue and iron-red, the jar and cover painted in iron-red, blue, black, yellow and turquoise enamels, each of the tapering sides alternately decorated with a long tailed pheasant perched amongst the branches of a tree peony with rockwork and grasses beneath, the sloping shoulders with quatre-lobed cartouches containing precious objects on a scrolling foliate ground divided by two peony flower heads in iron-red, the neck with a band of formed geometric design, the cover similarly decorated as the shoulder.
The vase is in excellent condition save a short hairline crack to the interior of the neck, confined to the iron-red geometric band. The enamels are bright and fresh, and lighter than the photograph suggests, more typical to other examples within the Royal Collection.
His Grace the Duke of Marlborough, Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England.
