The peony is China’s national flower. Artists have employed the blossom as an iconographic symbol for centuries as it signifies opulence, richness, honour, beauty and elevated social status. Further to this, it symbolises the arrival of Spring, female beauty and recreation. When in full bloom, as we see on this pair of vases, the flower can also be read as a symbol for peace.
