A pair of Elizabethan oak panels with very unusual carving. One shows a man with a long beard holding a St Andrew's Cross or saltire. This device is usually associated with the apostle St Andrew who was crucified on a cross of this shape. The other panel shows a man holding a decapitated head in his right hand whilst in his left he holds a purse and under his arm a sword. These attributes suggest that the panel depicts St Matthew, the purse representing his employment as a tax collector and the sword his martyrdom by beheading. Both figures are shown standing on plinths of Renaissance design.
