The centres decorated with the initials “TRE”, above the date "1749", inside a double-circle medallion. The upper initial "R" represents the surname, and the lower initials "T" and "E" the christian names of a husband and wife. The well and rims decorated with four large sprays of the mimosa pattern with butterflies interposed. Decorated in blue on a pale blue glaze, the edges brown. Glaze loss to rims, and restoration to a break in one plate. Probably Bristol or Wincanton, 1749.
Surviving dated and inscribed plates in English delftware are rare. Plates were dated to commemorate special occasion, and were probably displayed within the home and only used during celebrations. The "mimosa" pattern was very fashionable during the second quarter of the 18th century. Fragments showing the "mimosa" design have been found in London, Bristol and Wincanton and Liverpool and, although slight differences can be attributed to each production area, attribution is very difficult.
Dated English Delftware (Lipski & Archer) nos 438/445 for other dated examples decorated with the "mimosa" pattern.
