The globe is inscribed: ‘Cary’s New Terrestrial Globe Exhibiting The Tracks and Discoveries made by Captain Cook also those of Captain Vancouver on the North West Coast of America and M. De La Perouse on the Coast of Tartary together With every other improvement collected from various Navigators to the present time’.
This type of globe base, made in exotic satinwood and retailed by the firm of William Cary on the Strand in London, was by far the most expensive model Cary’s offered. Their 19th century priced advertisement shows the different types and sizes available. It is preserved in the Guildhall Library in London.
