A fine early 19th century mahogany partner’s desk. The moulded top with faded green leather insert above two short and one long drawer to one side and two short and long dummy drawer to the opposing side. The pedestals with three graduated drawers to the front and single door to the reverse side all finished with ebonised line and replacement gold lacquered lion head brass knobs, terminating in plinth base with concealed castors.

The simplicity in design yet striking elegance of this pedestal desk epitomise the classical revival in English furniture in the early part of the 19th century introduced by designers like Thomas Hope and George Smith who both took inspiration from the classic. The bold choice of beautifully coloured mahogany contrasted with ebony or ebonised timber as well as the clean lines in the design can be seen on many examples of furniture designed by Hope or Smith.
